Core bits and drilling tools

Hole diameter is only one selection criterion. Confirm material suitability, machine connection and the approved cooling method before ordering a core bit.

Diamond core drill bits: a stone and tile guide

Diamond core drill bits are selected for a defined material and setup. A diamond-coated cylinder is not automatically suitable for every stone or machine. Identify the required hole diameter, workpiece thickness and access around the hole, then compare the approved working method and connection for the exact product. This prevents a tile accessory from being treated as a universal deep-drilling tool and keeps the purchasing conversation focused on the actual project.

Separate material suitability from hole size

Do not treat porcelain, glazed ceramic and natural stone as a single approved application. Confirm the manufacturer’s material rating. Determine hole size from the installation detail and the component that must pass through it; a nominal fitting size is not necessarily the hole diameter. For a sensitive installation, agree the final opening and tolerance with the person responsible for the project rather than selecting the nearest available bit by eye.

Check the connection before comparing prices

Bosch lists dry M14 core accessories for angle grinders separately from wet cylindrical-shank drilling accessories. The distinction is part of the specification, not a minor packaging detail. Match the spindle, chuck or threaded connection to the accessory. Correct diameter cannot compensate for an unreliable adaptor, loose mounting or operation outside approved limits. Include the machine model and a connection photograph in the enquiry.

Confirm usable depth and access

Visible body length is not a substitute for the specified working depth. Check workpiece thickness, clearance behind it and accessory limits together. For an installed surface, inspect the possible location of services behind the work area before drilling. If depth or access exceeds the accessory’s approved capability, choose a suitable tool and project method. A buying guide cannot replace the site check or machine instructions.

Use the cooling method approved for the setup

Dry and wet bits do not share one universal procedure. Take cooling, speed and debris-removal requirements from the accessory instructions and use equipment approved for that method. Do not add water to electrical equipment that is not designed for wet operation. Stop and investigate unusual behaviour, vibration or visible damage. More pressure is not a remedy for a mismatched tool or an unsuitable setup.

Your core-bit enquiry checklist

List the material, actual opening diameter, thickness, machine model, connection and approved cooling method. Add the number of holes and the importance of the finished edge. Those details support a useful comparison; they do not justify a universal promise about how many holes a bit will make. Recheck the proposed model against the project and confirm price, availability and supply terms separately.

Frequently asked questions

Does every diamond core bit fit a drill?

No. Check the approved machine and connection; M14, a cylindrical shank and a core-drilling connection are not interchangeable by assumption.

Can one bit cover stone and tile?

Only if the exact model is approved for both applications. Appearance and a diamond coating alone are not sufficient evidence.

What photographs help an enquiry?

Send the machine plate and connection, workpiece and hole location together with measurements. Images do not replace measured dimensions.
